Cardiac Calcium Scoring

Southtowns Radiology offers cardiac calcium scoring screening on our 64-slice CT. This non-invasive screening provides information on the presence, location and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries, the vessels that supply oxygen-containing blood to the heart muscle. Calcified plaque results from a buildup of fat and other substances under the inner layer of the artery. This material can calcify which signals the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD). People with CAD are at increased risk for heart attacks.

Why choose Southtowns Radiology? Because our experience matters.

Dr. Gerald Joyce is the only physician in Western New York board-certified level II cardiac CT. What this means is you will be ensured superior care from your experience during the exam to the interpreted results that are sent to your doctor. Dr. Joyce reads all the CT cardiac calcium scoring exams performed at Southtowns Radiology, so you know you will always be in good hands.

The major risk factors of CAD include:

  • Cigarette smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Family history of heart attacks
  • High blood cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Overweight or obese
  • Physical inactivity

To prepare for the test, patients must refrain from caffeine and smoking for four hours prior. You may continue to take your usual medications. The test will be performed in a CT machine with a technologist. Patients will need to have three monitors attached to their chest. The technologist may need to shave a small area of the chest for men to adhere the monitor to the skin. Women may have to change if they are wearing a bra with metal in it. The CT scan is painless, fast and easy. The entire process will take about 10 minutes all together.

The total cost for cardiac calcium scoring is $200. Patients paying out of pocket may use cash, a major credit card or a health savings account (HSA) to cover their costs.
