PET/CT Scanning

PET is an acronym for Positron Emission Tomography. PET is a test that uses special imaging cameras and a radioactive type of sugar to produce pictures of the function and metabolism of the cells in the body.

CT (Computed Tomography), sometimes referred to as a CAT scan, uses specialized equipment to obtain image data in a 360-degree arc around the body, and then uses advanced computer processing to show thin cross-sectional images of the body tissue.

CT imaging is particularly useful for investigating lung, bone, soft tissue, and blood vessels. With this technology radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, vascular disorders, infectious disease, trauma, and musculoskeletal disorders. CT scanning is a very efficient and patient-friendly exam that involves little radiation exposure.

A PET/CT scan merges both technologies into a single machine. It provides a picture of function (PET) and a picture of anatomy (CT) and a merged picture of both the body's metabolism and structure.

These procedures may require slight preparation and an appointment. You must bring the written requisition form from your physician and arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the examination.
