Bone Densitometry

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more susceptible to breaking. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine and wrist.

Southtowns Radiology offers an imaging procedure dedicated to detecting osteoporosis or bone demineralization in its earliest stages.

Our doctors use an enhanced form of x-ray technology called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA). DEXA bone densitometry is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). DEXA is a quick, painless procedure for measuring bone loss. Measurement of the lower spine and hips are most often done. The imaging time usually takes less than one minute per scan.

These procedures require no preparation but do require an appointment. You must bring the written requisition form from your physician and arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the examination.
